Absolutely beautiful work!
Could not say one bad thing about any single one of the shots. The jib/slider moves were perfect! Spectacular! Just... wow!
The only thing I had hoped for was just *one* timelapse shot that was not HDR when we saw the whole chapel. HDR is cool but there's something about having black fill the frame when its dark inside, to emphasize the contrast of the light cutting through. Would have loved to see a wide shot of that in the chapel.
Overall though I could not say anything bad about these shots. They were all perfect. Well done.
Impressive, beautiful shots music and edition.
A really hard work on this video.
Congratulations.
Thanks! You can't have all. But probably next time I'd shoot it the other way. I never to the same things twice :)
i love these hdr timelapse sequences. absolutly stunning. awesome pictures. can realy imagin the amount of rendertime to process the HDR TL´s
Looking forward to receiving mine :)
I will have to push my creativity in order to get anywhere near this of course :)
Real ambience from the chapel as recorded by internal 5D mic! You can hear follow focus :D Initially wanted to replace it with some stock ambience or precomposed one, but finally decided to keep this one as it is REAL.
very cool shots, lovely moves, perfect composition ... just - for me - HDR is overdone here. looks like a computer animation, not like a video. don´t get me wrong, HDR is powerful and i really like it, i´d just not overdo it ... i think it´s more powerful if you´re not sure at first sight if it´s HDR or not.
nevertheless, over all - great work!
Wow, I loved the HDR Stuff. The other stuff also looks stunning. And I love the computer-game feel of the HDR.
Cool Stuff.
Wow, epic work, Patryk. It's kinda disturbing, in such a way that we're not quite sure if what we're seeing is real or a 3D animation.
I would like to see a non-HDR version of this short. I can't help but think it would be more special than it already is. Still, incredible work!
I would also like to see a HDR-free version.
Nevertheless, great achievement!!!
One of the best videos online. Better get featured by vimeo...
I love your videos and admire your abilitys but I thing the footage are overloaded. I dont see the telple but some videogame.
anway RESPECT
This is an awesome timelapse film...I love the moves and the dust in the light ;) Cool work !!
Thank you! Please share the movie. I wish someone took care about this place.
Great work Patryk!
I too think it's a bit to much HDR but hey, who am I to judge?
Those moves are awesome and the environment is breathtaking...
Speaking of moves, I was wondering about the combined slider and tilt shots, what gear did you use to accomplish that?
Thanks! the HDR post is controversial. The moves - this was just the dolly shots and a DitoGear Slider + some smart post. I have my DS2000 head and planning on joining it with the slider, but did not have time to fix the threads mismatch prior to shooting.
Beautiful place, I hope they restore it.
Thanks for sharing, great work.
This is simply awesome! I am totally awestruck!!! Nice camera movements and use of perpsective. Excellent color grading!!!
Me too! Love it and admire the craftsmanship but the HDR is a bit too much for my taste.
Very nice Movie. HDR makes it look very artsy ;-) I like the lightrays from outside! But I think this should be two movies, one with the normal lights and one with HDR ;-)
Very Good work though!
oh man, there are so many marvellous pictures in it, extending the tonal range here produced really amazing results!
It's on its way! I bet you'll make a lot of great stuff with it!
I agree, HDR is cool but dark shadows in a structure like this would work too. Was it dusty in there or did you kick some up for the effect?
In fact there's a lot of dust. After each day of shooting we were totally covered with this dust. It is enough to walk across to make it fly all around.
Thank you Jay! I like the fact people comment also about the subject, not only techniques used.
Really great work, Patryk. Looks absolutely surreal, amazing place - hope somebody takes care of it before it crumbles to pieces.
There sometimes a little flickering going on in the timelapses, have you tried the CHV plugin "Long Exposure" (part of the Time Collection)? I started using it for timelapses a while back and it works like a treat.
Can't wait to get my hands on the slider!
Thank you Nino! I used GBDeflicker, which is great, but of course it won't be able to manage local lighting changes which cause the flicker here. I did not know the plugin you mentioned, but I'll give it a try.
Your slider is on its way!
epic in mood. great location / setting. other wordly and fantasy / sci-fi.
Great Job! you most admit motion control is not available to most humans, but you use it to perfection, combined with HDR, the sequence of shot, the motion and the music mix perfectly. Now what do you do if you have people moving in the shot? it wouldn't work, but even as a replacement for 3D would be really cool. you can easly make it more "real" by superimposing the layer of the original footage, with more or less opacity. excellent!
As always you do beautiful work. Congratulations to the whole team. Brilliant.
Man this is rich! I can't tell if the interior is made of wood or marble! Lovely work Patryk. Aggghhh I have so so so much to learn... I appreciate your artistic genius.
Beautiful! Well Patryk! How did you do the dust? Loks amazing.
My first reaction is wow! And that ditogear is amazing. At first I too thought the HDR was a bit much and perhaps incongruous with the other images. However I think it was a deliberate artistic decision and as a piece still sits well on it's own. The room looks like a video game, almost fake, and that's strangely part of it's allure. Very well done.
Hey Patryk, great movie, im really like non-places and your film is so powerful, in fact i have a lot of places to know, congrats, now is the fourth time i watch the video.
I have a photography project, it called Essay About Absence, i visit the non-places and i build a stop motion, if you have a time visit my channel - http://vimeo.com/channels/129994
sorry about my english
Sucess!
Splendid work, great location to photograph. I was blown away by the motion and composition. It looks expensive.
The HDR had me questioning whether it was 3D camera projection at times though. But the technique has a neat aesthetic nonetheless.
Thank you! In fact we had no budget for it! There were no camera projection at all. However, some shots were only 1-axis dolly shots with flat panning added in post. Wide lens and perspective distortion added feeling of more axes.
Amazing Work Patryk, Can you tell us more about the place, where it is, is it abandoned, can someone just walk in there to see it?
thanks
Incredibly beautiful. Why is such a unique and gorgeous building in such utter disrepair??
Patryk
Stunning as usual! I am hoping you might consider exhibiting here an edit without the HDR effect. It's interesting as it is, but I would be very interested in seeing a less manipulated version. Of course, the footage may have been shot in a way that obviates a more raw edit, but I tend to like a little less manipulation.
I'm wondering, as others including JAG are, why the lovely chapel has fallen into disrepair. Was it damaged in war? Was its congregation displaced?
Anyhow, congratulations on yet another stunning short film. You are quite a talent!
I would have to agree. HDR pushed to the point of looking like animation. I fight the same battle when doing HDR. Sometimes I add the 0 ev layer on top of the rendered HDR clip afterwards. I mess around with the opacity of the 0 ev clip until I get a more realistic look.
Thank you for your comment. I am rather not planning on editing it again. I really wanted to achieve this sort of look. I understand that it might not appeal to someone - it is very subjective matter.
Regarding the church itself - I'll try to post more details about it soon on my blog. Just been a bit busy recently. I'll post URLs here.
I wouldn't name it 'love' - just a recent direction of exploration. Certainly one of many other that will come ;)
Very evocative opening sequence, along with those fading light shots. Great work Patryk!
WoOoW, first video I like on vimeo!
I know how to do timelapse and just today know from you the concept of how to do moving timelapse but in HDR, I have no idea!
Could u explain more on this "shooting in HDR" ? was it while editing the pictures or the video!? and which software do u use for HDR ?
Cheers
Great work!! Świetna robota!! Chętnie bym to odwiedził. Jak się dostaliście do środka? Z tego co czytałem obiekt jest zamknięty.
Thank you! I really appreciate your opinion. People tend to speak a lot about technology, so I am pleased to hear that.
Actually I could process HDRs less aggressively to get more natural look, but I like it as is. With people in HDR is is not that easy. Actually you'd need to make advanced compositing and masking to make it work. Ghosting reduction methods are not advanced enough yet in the software I tried.
If you'd like to know more about the technical details - please check my TL workflow at lookycreative.com
Basically it was shot in HDR, in stills, with -2/0/+2 exposure bracketing, combined together into 32bpp color space and tonemapped to 16bpp. Then converted to 10bpp ProRes and 8bpp for final rendering.
Thanks Patryk,
I'll check the website
I just found that the camera can automatically take 3 photos with diff. exposure at the same time! "Auto-Exposure Bracketing (AEB)" I can't remember that my D90 does that!
Very nice. It's is nice location too. Would be interesting to see some non hdr parts. Actually, with hdr there would be no reason to use time-lapses I guess.
Sensationally cinematic. And how HDR should be used. Quite wonderful. And the music? Sublime.
Thanks! Yes, Thomas did a really great and outstanding job with the music. I am so pleased he agreed to work on this project!
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful work. thank you for posting. What software did you use for HDR if you don't mind me asking?
http://lookycreative.com/lang/en/know-how/timelapse-compendium/timelapse-postproduction-workflow
Fantastic! I've never seen a "Video Look HDR timelapse" before. Magnifique!
Thanks for sharing Patryk...absolutely beautiful and stunning. Great work.
Though there're some flickering in your tone mapping, i cannot argue with the music you chose. It's amazing and seamlessly fits into the graphics.
Quite a technical feat!
The removal of the kind of shadow we're used to actually makes it look like CG though, which is a bizarre side-effect that I didn't expect, but i bet with a less pronounced effect this techiques could be very useful!
Many thanks for sharing,
JG
Wonderful project, filmed in a truly unbelievable building just how it has been left to rot is beyond me. On the down side for my taste the over produced HDR look had too much the touch of Gothic Disney for me far better would have been to keep a more natural look with a good colour grade.
Well done all the same.
Thanks! Yes, the HDR tone mapping is quite controversial by now. That's good :) I am still thinking about producing an alternate version - a bit more natural. That days I played with that strongly tone mapped look.
Exquisite use of HDR!! The subtleties of light and exposure draw you in to this beautiful piece. I can imagine how this chapel looked when it was new, such a wonderful piece of architecture. Keep up the good work!
This is absolutely stunning. Amazing work. Thank you for posting!
We all have to use the same words to discribe your film....Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful !
Stunning work. Very nice montage. And the dolly moves are fantastic, adding new depth and breathtaking angles of view. This is unique, the place, the light, the presentation in this film.
If I may comment, my only complaint, as others have mentioned above, HDR gives a computer animation unreal feel which probably doesn't do justice to the place, making it seem like it was computer designed. For me this took away some of the magic while watching, but this may just be me and personal taste.
Congratulations again, for your patience and your achievement.
Amazing film. Amazing HDR. Amazing place. Thank you.
Where can I find more information on the temple?
Unfortunately there's not much info. I have got some over 50 yrs old pictures - will post soon. Also there are few articles in Polish in the local press. Maybe Wikipedia?
wow that is incredible!!
the HDR made it look more real than so-call 3D
This film is literally everything I aspire to be (and be able to do.) Great photography/cinematography, beautiful shots, angles, framing.
This video is perfect.
Too bad I'm a broke college student ;)
Wow Patryk, that is amazing work! That is a lot of exposures!
A really lovely piece of work, in particular the shot leading up to the 2:29 mark (very eclipse like).
Great photography/cinematography.
But for me the wide shots around 1:17-1:20 look _much_ better than the HDR shots after it.
Why would you want to film something real in a way that makes it look like a 3D game-rendering from 10 years back? Why use HDR in a way that becomes a strange special effect rather than a subtle improvement to the range provided by film/sensor?
Mikael, Why? I was experimenting with the technique that days. Playing around with tools. It is rather common, that when you get a new toy you push it just to check what's possible. To learn. Then you use these effects much more subtle way.
Some time passed and I will probably reedit it taking into account all your comments.
Patryk, thanks for the reply. Don't get me wrong, I have great respect for groundbreaking experiments like The Chapel.
But looking at the Making of video and the before/after samples (6:55) I can't help but wonder how amazing the non-HDR pans would have been with some processing. Without the "retro-3D rendering filter".
This discussion reminds me of the video "The Third & The Seventh", here http://vimeo.com/7809605. Its a 3D rendering that is very realistic, almost unbelievable. Now, what you have done is actually film reality but then take it to the opposite direction by making it look less real.
This is just too amazing! I don't even know if that was the right word to use. heck there isn't a word that can be able to explain how beautiful this is. it's just way too EPIC!
I here by name this ' reality reversal'.
great piece of work.
Simply stunning... breathtaking. Great job Patryk, Robert & Agnieszka!
This video is incredible. Haven't read all the previous comments, but if there ever was an argument for HDR photography or cinematography, this would be it. Very nice work.
This beautiful film reminds me of the old computer game MIST. Does anyone remember MIST and its visuals?
What happened to the HDR processing @ 2:29 in the video? There is a bit of a jump...
I see you just got featured on the Gizmodo website, should push your view numbers up.
so beautiful, great shots, what an amazing structure. And however beautiful it looks now, someone should consider renovating it
very cool comment, it's just that, for me, it's a little unnecessary here. don't get me wrong, your comments are good, but this guy's vid is AMAZING and you're imposing as some kind of authority.
nevertheless, overall, great comment!
back-handed comments feel shitty huh?
oh wow ... interesting to see that you got this wrong. the last thing here was to "impose as some kind of authority", sorry. all i wanted to say is my thoughts about HDR, and that it feels like an animation to me. sorry if you misunderstood me or maybe my english is just too poor and i didn´t get the right words to say what i mean. however, the only thing that feels a little bit shitty for me is the sarkasm in your post to be honest :-)
SIXTEENTH&BROADWAY:
Sorry but I fully agree with Christian here. The HDR is overblown and for me, detracts massively from what could be an incredible piece.
"your comments are good, but this guy's vid is AMAZING and you're imposing as some kind of authority."
So you're not imposing some kind of 'authority' in saying that Christians comments are out of place? Does noone have the right to have dissenting opinion?
"back-handed comments feel shitty huh?"
Now you're just being an arse.
Christian absolutely nailed it, and surprised so few have responded to the marked difference in quality between the stunning minimalist shots tracking dustfall and the painfully overloaded, violently compressed HDR shots. I so want to see those images as they were shot, as the execution is otherwise marvelous. As it is this is unwatchable.
Amazing work. It looked like an impeccably rendered 3-d scene. Perhaps a cut scene for a game like Diablo 3.
5 STAR MASTERPIECE !!!!! You sir are an artist !!!! have watched 20 time in a row, stunning work , for me this was epic from start to finish , could not have been better ......congrats , and to share you techniques , people should really be grateful for such insight ..... brilliant , full stop.
dobra robota
ciekawa realizacja
Stunning work, an absolute labour of love. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful building with us, god knows what it was like when it wasn't ruins.. The disrepair gives it such soul.
really amazing work! is that a tripod in the scene above the arches at 3:04?
That thing probably collapsed by now. Put your foot in the wrong place & you'll fall 2 stories. Those crank sliders are still way too short, thus a lot of movies these days have really short dolly movements compared to older movies.
Nice work, but I do not agree about the tripod showing at 3:00 - would have been perfect without that peace :)
Gratulacje!
Swietne zdjecia, ktore utrwalily ten maly, zapomniany kosciolek na zawsze. Dzieki!
Great Work Patryk. I share it, here:
http://www.lanocheintermitente.com/2011/02/06/the-chapel-de-patryk-kizny/
Cheers
I'm simply BLOWN AWAY! spectacular visuals, dolly movements are simple perfection, music could not have been more fitting, this is a work of art capturing a work of art! BRAVO! A heartfelt standing ovation !!!!!!
Amazing footage. About the HDR, I thought it was cool, it was exagerated but I liked how it made it look like a 3D model with the movement of the camera, and it really brought the beauty of the building up rather than showing it like a ruin. I suffer when I see such beautiful buildings like this one in such conditions. They should invest in restoring that instead of builiding cheap green glass cubes as they are doing right now.
Gizmodo called it spot on. It looks like a level from Gears of War.
Stellar job Patryk and to all others involved.
It's amazing how much live action HDR looks like a Game Engine (not a critique).
Keep up the great work.
Os
Hey I know it must seem like a simple question but what do you use to create your title text, also what effect are you using on the text, I assume after effects was used.
Very nice work! I can't imagine the ammount of work that went in to the process.
What happened to the chapel? I hate to see old buildings, even ones in disrepair, get torn down or destroyed...
I don't normally like HDR images. In fact I quite hate them. But this thing so damned well done I can't help but love it. I'd like to think that this is an example of doing something technically sophisticated in order to enhance the emotional content of the film, rather than simply showing off. Beautiful work.
I think the HDR shots are way overdone for my taste. Too bad, because otherwise very nicely excuted.
Very impressive.
I dont even want to imagine how much work is behind all this.
Great job
Beautiful !
About the chapel, is there any restauration project ? The architecture is quite original... You could propose your film to raise funds ;-)
Seriously one of the most beautiful things I have seen in a long time.
I have shown this video last week to Delta Photo Club in Vancouver BC as a part of HDR / multiexposure presentation . A lot of photographers were very impresses with quality and workmanship. So many of them were asking "where is it ? " ... I'm glad to be Polish !
I'm still working on my shots from Zeliszow but couple of them made to "HDR in Architecture " slide show
http://vimeo.com/19735027
All the best !
outstanding!! Absolutely gorgeous. You and the team have done a magnificent job!! Keep up the incredible work!
Beautiful work. Very inspiring. I've been wanting to get involved with this type of photography for quite some time, and after seeing your great work, I'm going to take the next step and acquire the necessary gear. I already have a Canon 5D Mark II. I just need all the other gear.
Cool! Good luck. Let me know if you need anything.
Also, you can check my TL tutorials and TL gear overview:
http://lookycreative.com/timelapse-compendium
Amazing work, the creativity is very impressive. Not sure if anyone has asked this yet so I apologize if you have already answered. Was wondering approximately how many exposures did it take to create the entire piece? (inclusive of all the bracketed exposures)
Hi Patryk, just saw this movie thru a link on LaFloret's Blog. I've been a huge fan of HDR for ages - but never seen it done for movies! This has made my day, it is simply superb; visually and creatively. Absolute craftsmanship. Totally inspiring!
PS. I kto by pomyślał. Tak blisko z Oławy do Wrocławia :)
Absolutely Gorgeous! You have brought the spirit back to this chapel!
Well done Patryk, I've never seen anything like this done before! Brilliant work!!
Simply amazing, I have watched this over and over and showed it to many people of an example of the type of work that can be done but low budget amateurs like ourselves. You should be proud as this will stand the test of time.
forget the camra work, which is great....it really is such a magnificent chapel, so the work has had its effect, in drawing attention to magnificent piece of architecture. Is it being saved/restored?
This is fantastic work, thank you for sharing! Such a beautiful and mystic piece of an amazing place.
WOW WOW WOW, I just signed in, after I watched this video just to press"LIKE"
to be honest didnt like the HDR shots, looked like a flickering CGI shot for me.
Wow! Truly amazing work. I am hoping your film is getting the recognition it deserves.
I REALLY don't understand why you make that cut at 2:18-2:20! why cut to such a "boring" shot compared to the stellar hdr footage? it makes no sense to me, plz explain!
i am from Brazil in south america and think this was a beautiful shot...
i lot of hard work you did on here didn't you...
wow i never seen such beautiful n inspirational. cant wait to make something with my 5d well put together n plan
Great job! The place is wow... really beautiful! Magnificent!
Pamiętała Was jako chłopaków z Poznania ..;-D
It's absolutely stunning. It looks a little bit like CGI, just blew my mind. Great great work. Congrats!
the concept of this is spectacular! I am not very familiar with video production but you made a dead space into something beautiful. well done! I am sure that this must have taken quite an amount of effort on your part.
Please enjoy the "Making of The Chapel": www.vimeo.com/19107357
Beautiful and captivating, but stylistically it doesn't make sense to include Middle Eastern instruments in the soundtrack.
Amazing video! We featured it on this month's time lapse exhibition on Cineclectic: http://www.cineclectic.com/exhibition/time_lapse
Post about this video : http://julienmarie.fr/2011/du-hdr-en-video/
Patryk this is astounding - the movement, light, chiaroscuro, grade, everything - WOW, congratulations!
Absolutely incredible, as generated by a computer, but it is reality! WOW!!! Congratulation
This is so beautiful Patryk. The music is perfect. All of it was great and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for posting.
Great work, great execution, great hdr shots, nice scenes, great detail, nice editing it is just a great job!
Hi, Im not a professional photographer or anything, but this just blew me away. I have taken HDR stills before, but never seen HDR like this. For me the film was "full emotional impact", I absolutely loved it. The universe has given you a gift here Patryk, to share with the world, an ancient spiritual place, to show us one mans dream, and ascending us to the heavens and gods, which you have done so brilliantly, Karl Langhans and his followers would be proud of you Patryk, well done, and the HDR in my opinion was perfect, the depth the detail and the accending soundtrack in this was amazing.... Thankyou...
Thank you very much for your comment. I really really appreciate it.
S T U N N Y !
Really, Great Stuff Patryk, Robert, Anieszka & Tomas !
I added to K I N O
vimeo.com/channels/kino
You are all Welcome !
oOÉRIC
Freakin' brilliant!
I can only imagine how much time the HDR must have taken to shoot and process. Although, I especially like the shots where the dust is floating in the air. Again, this is just stunning.
Thanks for sharing.
you guys see a tripod at 3:02?
this video is great!! absolutely great! i love it :)
Dziękujemy za ten piękny i przejmujący film.
Tekst o tym miejscu znleźliśmy np. tu: http://wyborcza.pl/1,76842,7372983,Niekatolickie.html
Beautiful work mate !! So magic and poetic !! just special ....
:)
OMG! I felt in love in this shots, this place, and music! It's really fantastic and awesome video! And the best thing is that you are polish! Unique work. I can't use words to describe my feelings while watching it...
Big WOOW!!!
Best regards from Poland ;-]
Pozdro ^ ^
Stunning work, Patryk! I am in awe of the beauty of the shots, the magical and unreal quality of HDR photography, and the absolutely fantastic location. Thank you for sharing!
The light was incredible and what a beautiful building. Great job.
Dzięki! Widziałem artykuł oczywiście szukając informacji o tym miejscu. Pracuję nad kolejnym filmem, który dzieje się w tej przestrzeni. Będzie dostępny jeszcze pewnie w tym roku.
One question - was it anamorphic or cropped in post? Either way its perfection!
Cropped. For aesthetic reasons and also to leave more margins for pan&scanning that was used.
Piękny film, gratuluję! Kościół w Żeliszowie ma niesamowity potencjał dzięki fakturze i oświetleniu, mam nadzieję, że długo się jeszcze będzie trzymał :)
This is so amazing and powerful words escape me. I absolutely love it!
Absolutely brilliant. The photography, the editing, the choice of music everything. I will add it to the HDR Vimeo channel if it's ok with you. https://vimeo.com/channels/341638
A marvelous piece of art ! Al the angles and P.O.V , the music the light just astonishing ! Thank you for sharing this.
Wow, wow, WOW!!! I am speechless. I don ‘t even know what to type.
Simply Stunning…
Is this the first HDR Motion Timelapse out there? I have yet to come across another. I will definitely be following your work from now on… Keep it up.
